While many higher education institutions centralize their disability-related requests, UC Berkeley utilizes a unique structural model where the office processing housing accommodations operates as its own dedicated department within the housing assignments office, independent from both the Disability Resource Office and Residence Life. This session will examine how a dedicated housing accommodations framework manages extreme caseload scale, structures daily workflows, and coordinates identity-based and disability requests. Furthermore, presenters will address how they navigate an unprecedented surge in specific accommodation requests for limited campus inventory such as unshared apartments. Participants will explore practical frameworks for how UC Berkeley’s housing accommodations department effectively collaborates during escalated overlaps, learn how the department determines space prioritization when approved needs surpass inventory, and receive more insight on how the unique set-up of the housing accommodations department contributes to the accessibility ecosystem for high-volume campuses like UC Berkeley.
